This post came from blood, sweat, and tears.
Well, ok, not exactly. But I swear I nearly bled, I definitely sweat, and while I don't think there were tears, there were DEFINITELY swears.
As you may know, we recently relocated back to Chicago after five years in Las Vegas. We are imposing on the hospitality of my mother for the time being as we house hunt, but I wanted to make the adjustment as easy for J as possible. [Honestly not sure why I worried – moving home gave him that many more people to fawn over him, so he's kinda good. :)]
As you may have seen in my guest post on Peek Into My Paradise, J is hardcore into the Pixar sensation CARS. This isn't a new fad, either, he's been steadfast for at least 1.5 of his nearly 3 years on Earth. My kid has dedication.
I smell crafty projects!!
Yeah, of course I abused my son's love of CARS to go crafty-crazy. 🙂
And so I went on a mission to give my son a fun and personal space in his new home. First up…
Okay, so it's a CARS room. However, books are very important to me and my husband, so we want to make them a focal point in our son's life as well. We read him a book every night of his infancy, and rebooted the process with our move, making Story Time = Priority Time.
Read about how we gave him his own little Book Nook …
Next on the agenda was gathering and storing all those die-cast toy cars he's collected. He honestly does play with them all (some more than others, I'll grant you) but he's not neglectful of any of them. Like any kid, he has his favorites – Finn McMissile, Mater, the King…but then he'll go through a spurt where Lightning McQueen, Doc, or Sheriff are his constant companions. It's adorable.
Anyway, I wanted something to keep his cars off the floor/table/etc, but give him the visual he needed to still play with them. Who wants toys to sit unused?

Next to tackle was the army of Stuffed Animals. Ok, I remember having a ton of these as well, but as a parent, now I get why they are kind of annoying. When I was pregnant and receiving baby gifts, I was all like Agnes in Despicable Me and "ITSSOBIGANDFLUFFY!!!"
Now?
It better have SIGNIFICANT sentimental value, or so help me…
Since I'm kind of a sucker for sentiment, and, up until this point, ALL his stuffed animals have sentiment, I had to devise a storage solution. They were literally lining the walls of his room like some secret army about to attack.
Cars room storage solution?
PISTON CUP!!!!
"Uh, you did what in your cup?"
No, the Piston Cup. The trophy to beat all trophies! (If you have a kid that worships CARS, anyway.)

I really wanted to abuse my Cricut (especially my Disney Cricut cartridges) to make some unique wall art for J's room. Even if you don't have a cutting machine, you can still pull off something similar using stencils and paint or with some scissors, time, and effort.

I don't have any tutorials on this, but prior to leaving Vegas, I scored a beat up train table for the kid for about $50. (Ever shopped these things?? They can run up to $200!) The tracks were broken and glued, but since J isn't really a train kid, I just ripped off some tracks and flipped the boards to the pretty naked side underneath. It happened to (almost) perfectly fit his new (also yard sale score) Geo Trax Radiator Springs Mega Racing set. Um, I'm kind of in love with this toy myself.
Sally and McQueen can take their drive…
My personal buddy, Sheriff, naps behind the sign…
Sarge (minus his buddy Fillmore) stares at the stoplight.
And where would ANYONE be without Flo's V8 Cafe?? "Finest Fuel on Route 66!"
For the finishing touches, we got J into the decorating action and let him help decorate the walls behind his Cars bed with some stick on Cars decals.

As you can see from the picture, J is still in love with his Mickey Mouse from our trip to Disneyland!
There's still some room for more decorating – we left a nice large blank area on the wall.
The hubs actually is getting into the spirit and wants to design something for that wall himself. Can't wait to see what he comes up with!
And it's all I can do not to come up with something for over the closet, but I have a pretty ingrained rule on not decorating above a certain height. A little naked space is ok too. 🙂
Overall, I couldn't be happier with the way J's room turned out! It looks clean and efficient, which is important to Mommy, yet all his toys and books are accessible on his own level. And yes, believe it or not, he is actually doing a good job of keeping it pretty clean! Can't really complain about that one! 🙂
